3 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Try To Sell Your Home Yourself

by Arnold Gomez

If you are getting ready to sell your home, you might be thinking about forgoing the real estate agent and doing it yourself. Even though this might seem like a good way to save money, and even though it might seem as if it would be fairly easy to sell your home on your own, it is generally worth it to hire a pro to help you. These are a few reasons why.

1. You Probably Don't Have the Connections That a Real Estate Agent Has

Your average real estate agent talks to lots of people who are thinking about buying properties on a daily basis and has plenty of contacts. You might not know anyone who would be interested in buying your home, but your potential real estate agent might know of someone who is interested. It can be tough to compete with all of the real estate-related contacts that your local real estate agent has.

2. The Paperwork Can Be More Confusing Than You Think

Selling a home isn't as easy as many people think it is, and it typically includes a whole lot of paperwork. If you aren't experienced in selling houses and doing this type of paperwork on your own, you might find yourself confused, stressed, and overwhelmed when it comes time to handle these things. A real estate agent has the training and experience to guide you and the potential buyer through the entire process.

3. You Might Be Too Emotionally Attached

As someone who is probably at least somewhat attached to your home, it can be easy to let your emotions get in the way when it comes to selling. You might find yourself looking for the "perfect buyer" rather than the buyer who will pay you what you deserve for the home; for example, it can be tough to sell to an investor who you know is going to make huge changes to the property and resell it or rent it out versus a nice family you think would love your home. With a real estate agent, however, you'll have a neutral party who is not emotionally invested in the home, which can help you make better decisions when it comes to selling your property.

As you can see, it often is not a good idea to try to sell your home on your own. Instead, consider working with a real estate agent to help ensure that you can make the sale in a timely manner and for the price that you deserve.
